Becoming a Member of the Sheriff's Office

Thank you for your expressed interest in the Calvert County Sheriff's Office. As you consider a law enforcement career with our agency, you have the opportunity to become a member of one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the nation. Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be 21 years of age upon graduation from the Southern Maryland Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Applicants must be of good moral character and reputation.
  • Applicants must have a valid driver's license.
  • Applicants must have U.S. citizenship.
  • Applicants must possess a high school diploma. or equivalent, accepted by the Maryland Department of Education.

Application Process

The first step to becoming a deputy sheriff is completing an employment application. Applications are accepted continuously throughout the year, except for a brief period during the beginning of the selection process. The selection process is conducted at least twice annually, usually in late spring and late fall. The selection process is conducted for the purpose of creating an eligibility list, regardless of any current openings.

Selection Process

  1. Written Examination and Physical Agility Screening - This is the beginning of the selection process. You will be notified by mail or by email of the test date. Both tests will be administered on the same day.
  2. Oral Interview - Upon successful completion of the previous phase, you will be scheduled for an oral interview. The oral interview board will be comprised of members from various bureaus within the Sheriff's Office.
  3. Polygraph Examination and Background Investigation - Upon successful completion of the previous phases, you will be scheduled for a polygraph examination and a background investigation. A thorough investigation will be conducted regarding any illegal drug history. The use and/or frequency of use of certain illegal drugs may disqualify you as a deputy sheriff candidate.   4. Medical Examination / Drug Screening and Psychological Examination - Upon successful completion of the previous phases, you will be scheduled for a medical examination / drug screening and a psychological examination.

After all phases have been completed, an eligibility list will be created. When deputy sheriff positions become available, candidates are chosen from the eligibility list.
