About the Sheriff

Sheriff Ricky Cox

I have called Calvert County my home since birth.  I grew up on a tobacco farm in Huntingtown, MD. The farm allowed me to develop a strong work ethic and learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and dedication. I attended Calvert County Public Schools and graduated from Calvert High School. While in high school, I enjoyed playing baseball, football, and showing my pride for my school and county. I elected to take the Criminal Justice classes offered and found that I had a passion for Criminal Justice. I participated and completed the first-ever Criminal Justice Program taught in Calvert County. During my senior year, I set a personal goal and wrote it into my senior memories in the yearbook, to one day hold the Office of Sheriff of Calvert County.

In 2000, I completed boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina, and earned the honor of being a United States Marine. During my career as a Marine, I proudly served two tours of duty in Iraq, was meritoriously promoted and honored to lead Marines in combat. My time in the Marine Corps continued to build upon the character traits I had learned from my parents and the tobacco fields. I developed essential knowledge and skills to be an influential leader in the most stressful of situations. I was proud of what the Marines and I were able to accomplish and valued the relationships I built. For my service and efforts, I was decorated with numerous awards and medals in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In 2004 I was honorably discharged from the United States Marines and wanted to continue to serve and make a positive impact. I applied and was offered the position of Deputy Sheriff with the Calvert County Sheriff's Office (CCSO). I was again honored to be able to serve my community, make a positive impact on the county in which I was born and raised. My career with the CCSO has been a challenge and rewarding. I rose through the ranks of the office and have been fortunate to be able to serve and lead every bureau of the department. This experience gave me the ability to understand the challenges of the county, the department and celebrate the achievements and accomplishments as well. I have watched this county grow, face new challenges, and been a part of many of the solutions for the betterment. I have been blessed to receive many awards, including Rookie of the Year, State Deputy of the Year twice, and two medals for valor during my career.

In law enforcement, you learn the importance of giving back and find it gratifying and rewarding to serve the community in which you work. When I am not working, I volunteer in a variety of ways. I've coached and encouraged kids in a variety of sports and activities. I serve as a member of American Legion Post 206, Fraternal Order of Police, Knights of Columbus, a past volunteer firefighter, and an active member of the Board of Directors for the United Way of Calvert.

My family is my foundation of happiness and true success in life. My wife Susie, a schoolteacher in Calvert County, and I raise our three children Ella, Sean, and Luke, with the same values that our parents instilled in us. Our family knows the importance of supporting one another, loving each other, and the joy of having fun together.

I strongly believe that my faith, family, dedication, perseverance, and passion for the community and the good of all the citizens will assist me in my role as Sheriff of Calvert County. I affirm to you I will humbly and honorably serve you as your Sheriff and bring New Energy, New Perspective, New Commitment to Calvert County.
