Calvert County has the commissioner form of government in which the commissioners serve executive and legislative functions, operating under a Code of Public Local Laws of Calvert County, revised in 1985, and are subject to legislation adopted by the State Legislature:

"Beginning with the general election to be held in Calvert County in November 1978, five county commissioners shall be elected by countywide vote. Beginning with the general election to be held in Calvert County in November 2022, one county commissioner shall be a resident of and shall represent the first election district of the county; one county commissioner shall be a resident of and shall represent the second election district of the county, and one county commissioner shall be a resident of and shall represent the third election district of the county. Of the remaining candidates, the two receiving the highest number of votes shall be selected; and two county commissioners shall be residents of the county and shall represent the county at large. Each candidate for the office of county commissioner shall specify at the time of filing a certificate of candidacy whether the candidate is seeking to represent the county at large. Commissioners who are elected and qualify shall take office the third Tuesday of December following the election. Each commissioner shall hold office for four years or until a successor is elected and qualified (Code 1981,§ 4-102; 1985, chapter 715,§ 2; 2013, chapter 310, § 1)" See Code of Public Local Laws of Calvert County, Section 2-102.

Commission Appointments

The County Commissioners appoint a Clerk to their Board who shall hold office at the pleasure of the Commissioners. The Clerk shall perform the duties required by the County Commissioners.

The Board of County Commissioners meetings are held on Tuesdays beginning at 10 a.m. in the Chesapeake Hearing Room, located on the first floor of the County Administration Building. Evening meetings are scheduled when necessary. All regular or special meetings are open to the public. Executive Sessions are closed to the public pursuant to Section 10-508 of the State Government Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland.
